If counseling doesn't work, try divorce mediation

Getting divorced in Pennsylvania can be one of the most difficult emotional and financial events one may experience. However, sometimes, it is unavoidable, in which case going through divorce mediation or traditional divorce litigation is necessary. However, in other cases, couples may want to try counseling first before filing divorce papers.

If a couple decides to try counseling as a last-ditch effort before getting a divorce, choosing a professional whose specialty is in family systems is critical. This type of counselor can help both spouses to evaluate where they came from. After all, where they came from informs how they see the world around them, including their value as well as their images of how a relationship should be.

Spouses' expectations for their relationships, including their marriage, are initially formulated in early childhood. However, sciences now even shows that this may begin while a person is a fetus in his or her mother's womb. Those who have had difficult childhoods often develop negative views of themselves, and these negative views can affect how they deal with their spouses. However, challenging these negative emotions and developing more self-esteem may, in turn, have a positive impact on their marital relationships.

If counseling is not enough to keep two married people together, the couple may want to seriously consider going through divorce mediation versus litigation, as mediation tends to be less stressful than going to trial. During mediation, a couple can work toward a mutually satisfactory agreement when it comes to such matters as property division and alimony. An attorney in Pennsylvania can provide the guidance needed to navigate a divorce proceeding in a way that ultimately protects one's best interests.
